South Dakota Vehicle Registration & Title Assistance Registering and titling your motorhome, car or trailer in South Dakota can mean considerable savings for many RV owners. South Dakota has a low 3 percent excise tax on new or used motor vehicle/trailer purchases. Compare that with your current state. SD has no safety inspections or emission tests. The needed forms can be downloaded right here. We will answer questions and assist you through the process for a processing fee of $22 per item, and it can be done entirely by mail. Full-time RV'ers don't need a South Dakota driver's license to register vehicles in SD. Registration (license) fees are based on unloaded weight and age of vehicle. Fees are lower for vehicles 5 years and older. Just call us with the unloaded weight and age and we'll give you a registration quotation. You may not owe South Dakota's 3 percent excise tax on the purchase of new or used vehicles and trailers if you paid at least 3 percent to another state. South Dakota has reciprocity with most other states to grant credit for sales/excise tax paid to others. Motorhome example: A 23,000 pound motorhome, unloaded weight, less than 5 years old. Only $262, including plates, title and appropriate fees (add 3 percent sales tax on net price after trade-in, if not paid elsewhere). 5th Wheel example: A 12,000 pound 5th Wheel Trailer, unloaded weight, 7 years old, currently titled in another state. This would be a transfer, not a purchase. (Due to reciprocity, there would be no excise tax due in this example if tax paid in another state equaled or exceeded the 3 percent SD excise tax). 12 month registration would be $101.50 and the other fees remain the same for a total of $118.50. Automobile example: unloaded weight between 2,000 and 4,000 pounds (Honda Accord/Ford Taurus, etc) and less than 5 years old, currently titled in another state is only $64 for 12 months, including plates, title and all appropriate fees, if no excise tax is due. Important: Above examples are for 12 months. South Dakota registrations and annual renewal periods are determined by the first letter of your last name. This means first time registrations are usually prorated. Other special items are also available, such as Handicapped Plates or Personalized Plates. The above items are examples only.
