Why do so many full-time travelers look at South Dakota?

A well established destination for full time travelers

South Dakota has been a common home base choice for RVers and location independent travelers for decades, and the services around it are familiar with traveler situations.

    Traveler focused mail service

Straightforward access to mail forwarding, scanning and package handling designed around people who are rarely in one place.

A central home base while you travel nationally

One consistent South Dakota address to receive and manage mail no matter where you happen to be parked.

Vehicle registration options depending on circumstances

Many travelers look at South Dakota vehicle registration. Requirements and processing can vary by county and by your individual situation.

    No individual state income tax

South Dakota does not have an individual state income tax. What that means for you depends on your own circumstances, so talk with a qualified professional about your situation.

Your circumstances matter. Residency, taxation, insurance, voting, licensing and vehicle registration can involve different requirements. South Dakota is not automatically the right choice for every traveler.

    The big misunderstanding

A South Dakota mailbox is the starting point. It isn't the entire residency process.

Your mailing address gives you a consistent place to receive important mail while you travel.

But becoming a South Dakota resident for a particular purpose may involve additional steps and documentation depending on your circumstances.

This is why YBA helps travelers understand the entire setup rather than simply handing them a mailbox number.

Why residency becomes different when you live in an RV

When you no longer maintain a traditional permanent residence, the records in your life do not stop needing an address. Whether you travel solo or as a couple, with a fifth wheel and a truck or a motorhome and a toad, these still need consistent answers:

    Mail

Bills, tax forms, renewals and legal notices still need one consistent place to arrive while you move from campground to campground.

    Driver's license

Your license is issued by a state and tied to an address, so it becomes part of your home base decision.

    Vehicles

Your motorhome or trailer, plus any tow vehicle, need registrations and renewals that point somewhere stable.

    Insurance

RV and auto policies are written around where you are based and how your vehicles are used.

    Banking

Banks and financial institutions have their own address requirements, and not all of them treat a mailing address the same way.

    Voting, where applicable

Voter eligibility follows its own residency rules and is decided by election officials.

    Taxes and legal records

Tax filings, estate documents and other records need a consistent address. YBA does not provide legal or tax advice, so review these with a qualified professional.

    Before you sell the house

Start about 30 days before your move or South Dakota visit.

    • Think through which state will become your home base
    • Review driver's license requirements
    • Review vehicle registrations
    • Review RV and auto insurance
    • Review banking and financial institution address requirements
    • Set up dependable mail forwarding
    • Identify which records currently use your home address
    • Do not change everything blindly before understanding what each organization requires

    Your South Dakota trip

Full time RVers establishing South Dakota residency should plan the required South Dakota visit carefully. Requirements can change and your circumstances matter, so confirm current requirements before you travel.

    Lodging documentation

When applicable, keep proof of your South Dakota stay, such as a campground, RV park or hotel receipt.

    Driver's license preparation

Know which documents apply to you before you arrive, not after you are parked.

    Appointments

Schedule appointments when applicable, and plan your route around them.

    Original documents

Bring the correct original documents. Copies are not always accepted.

    Enough time

Leave room in your travel plans for every task you intend to complete while you are in the state.

Complete residency requirements and the document list are in our South Dakota residency guide.

Establishing South Dakota is only half of the conversation.

You also need to think about what you're leaving behind.

As you build your South Dakota home base, consider the ties that still connect you to your previous state.

    • Home or property
    • Driver's license
    • Vehicle registration
    • Voter registration
    • Insurance
    • Employment
    • Business interests
    • Financial accounts
    • Tax filings
    • Professional licenses
    • Other state specific connections

You generally don't want to act like a resident of two different states at the same time.

YBA provides address and administrative assistance, not legal or tax advice. Travelers with complicated tax, business, estate or domicile situations should consult qualified professionals.

This is why full-time travelers use more than a random virtual mailbox.

A generic mailbox provider answers one question: "Where should my mail go?"

YBA helps travelers work through the bigger one: "Where is home now, and what do I need to take care of?"

What about your RV and vehicles?

Driver's license and vehicle registration are separate processes.

Many full time RVers have more than one vehicle to think about, such as:

    • Motorhome
    • Tow vehicle
    • Toad
    • Truck
    • Fifth wheel
    • Travel trailer
    • Motorcycle

Vehicle registration requirements can differ from driver's license requirements, and processing can vary by county and by your individual circumstances. YBA offers Vehicle Registration Assistance for qualifying clients.

Vehicle Registration Assistance requires at minimum an active YBA Personal Traditional Mail Forwarding account, or a higher qualifying Personal Mail service or package.

If you're new to YBA and need mail, residency assistance and vehicle help together, Road Warrior is usually the logical place to explore first.

    Learn about vehicle assistance

Insurance is part of your RV home base.

RV and auto insurance requirements and underwriting can depend on the carrier, your vehicles, garaging information and your individual circumstances.

Establishing South Dakota residency does not automatically settle your insurance. Talk with your carrier about your full time RV situation before you change anything. YBA does not provide insurance advice.

What if my bank says my mailing address isn't enough?

A mailing address and a residential property address are not the same thing. Some financial institutions may request a residential property address.

Don't immediately purchase another address. First determine exactly what the bank or organization is requesting.

If they specifically require a residential address or related documentation, YBA's Dakota Address solution may be appropriate for your situation. Dakota Address is not required for every YBA client and is not a standard part of a South Dakota setup.

    Understand Dakota Address

Traveling as a couple or family?

You can add your spouse and children under age 18 to your YBA account. We recommend adding everyone who needs to be included when you first sign up.

Need to add someone later? No problem. Eligible family members can be added after your account is established for a $50 account update fee per person.

Common mistakes full time RVers make

Assuming a mailbox alone creates residency

A mailing address is a place to receive mail. Residency for a particular purpose involves additional steps.

Changing every account before understanding its requirements

Each organization has its own rules. Find out what each one requires first.

Confusing driver's license and vehicle registration requirements

They are separate processes with different requirements.

Assuming every bank accepts the same type of address

Some financial institutions may request a residential property address.

Waiting until the last minute to prepare documents

Starting about 30 days ahead gives you time to fix problems before your trip.

Changing insurance without talking to the carrier

Discuss your new full time RV situation with your carrier before making changes.

Assuming every full time traveler has the same circumstances

What worked for another RVer may not apply to you.
