How Often Do Full Time Travelers Need to Return to South Dakota?

By Jenna Puetz, owner of Your Best Address

For most full time travelers, the important timing is tied to South Dakota Driver Licensing.

A South Dakota driver’s license is generally valid for five years. When a qualifying full time traveler renews or replaces a license using the full time traveler process, current South Dakota DPS rules require proof of one night of stay in South Dakota within the previous year.

Some eligible travelers may renew online or by mail instead of appearing in person, but the recent South Dakota stay documentation is still part of the full time traveler requirements.

So the rule is not simply ‘come to South Dakota one night every five years.’

Why people say “one night every five years”

South Dakota driver licenses are generally valid for five years, so full time travelers often think of their South Dakota return around the license renewal cycle.

The current documentation requirement is more precise. DPS asks for a receipt from a South Dakota hotel, motel, campground or RV park proving one night of stay within the last year. One night spent exactly five years ago, or at some random point in between, does not automatically satisfy that requirement when you renew.

How long is a South Dakota driver’s license valid?

A standard South Dakota driver’s license is generally valid for five years. DPS renewal guidance reflects that cycle: it refers to whether you used the online or mail-in method “5 years ago (the last time you renewed or replaced).” Check the expiration date printed on your own license for your exact deadline.

Do full time travelers need a recent South Dakota stay when renewing?

Yes, under the current full time traveler Driver Licensing process. DPS lists a receipt from a South Dakota:

    • Hotel
    • Motel
    • Campground
    • RV park

showing one night of stay within the last year. The receipt must include your name. DPS adds that the receipt does not have to show your personal mailbox (PMB) address, but an additional address document is required if it does not.

Does online renewal mean you do not have to return to South Dakota?

Not necessarily. Eligible full time travelers may be able to renew online or by mail when they meet the current eligibility rules. But the DPS in-person renewal page and the required documents page both list the South Dakota one night stay receipt from within the last year as part of the full time traveler documentation. Online renewal changes how you apply, not whether that receipt is needed.

How often can a full time traveler renew online or by mail?

DPS describes the rule in two ways:

    • “If you are a South Dakota resident who travels full time, you can renew your license/ID card online or by mail once every 10 years. Otherwise, you must visit a South Dakota driver exam station to renew in person.”
    • If your license or ID card has not yet expired and you did not use the online or mail-in method 5 years ago (the last time you renewed or replaced), you may be eligible to renew online or by mail.

In practice, that usually means alternating: one renewal in person, the next possibly online or by mail, if you remain eligible.

When do you need to come back in person?

Some situations require, or may require, an in-person visit to a South Dakota Driver Licensing location. DPS examples include:

    • Getting your first South Dakota driver license or ID card
    • A renewal cycle when online or mail renewal is not available to you, such as when you have not applied in person in the last ten years
    • A driver license that has been expired more than 30 days
    • Testing situations, such as when you are required to take a driving test

DPS also lists changing your name, changing your license class, CDL class or endorsements, and wearing bioptic lenses. Check the current DPS page for your situation. DPS encourages scheduling well ahead of your expiration date, since appointments can take several weeks to find.

What if your license has been expired more than 30 days?

DPS says that if your South Dakota driver license has been expired more than 30 days, you must visit a South Dakota driver exam station in person and pass the knowledge test. If you have a motorcycle endorsement (Class 2 license), you must take both the operator’s knowledge test and the motorcycle knowledge test. DPS says you must schedule an appointment to take a test.

Do you need a new one-night stay every time you renew?

Under the current full time traveler process, the lodging receipt must show a South Dakota stay within the last year. An old receipt from five years earlier would not satisfy the current requirement.

One night is the minimum stay the current DPS requirement documents. You are not limited to exactly one night. Your receipt must still name you and come from a South Dakota hotel, motel, campground or RV park.

Does this mean you only need to visit South Dakota for Driver Licensing?

This article is specifically about South Dakota Driver Licensing timing. Travelers may visit South Dakota for other reasons too, such as:

    • Vehicle matters
    • Business matters
    • Property matters
    • Medical appointments
    • Personal travel
    • Other administrative needs

These are examples, not legal requirements. Whether any of them applies depends on your own situation.

    What about vehicle registration?

Motor vehicle registration and Driver Licensing are separate processes, handled by different agencies. The five-year driver license cycle does not control vehicle registration. Learn about our vehicle registration assistance and read do you need a South Dakota driver’s license to register a vehicle?

    What about voting?

Voting residency is separate from Driver Licensing. The one night stay and the five-year license cycle do not determine voting eligibility. For current rules, see the South Dakota Secretary of State elections and voting information.

    What about taxes and domicile?

The five-year Driver Licensing cycle and the one night licensing documentation do not create a universal schedule for maintaining domicile or tax residency. Other states may use different residency and domicile standards. Read residency vs. domicile for full time travelers and our South Dakota Residency guide. Complete your initial South Dakota setup and first Driver Licensing visit when applicable.

    2. 2

      Before the next license expiration

Review the current DPS requirements instead of relying on rules from five years earlier.

    3. 3

      Within the year before renewal

Make sure you have a qualifying South Dakota overnight-stay receipt if required under the current full time traveler process.

    4. 4

      At renewal

Determine whether you qualify for online, mail or in-person renewal.

    5. 5

      At the next renewal cycle

Check the rules again, because eligibility and requirements may change.

This is an educational example, not a guarantee of individual eligibility. For the full document list, see the documents full time travelers need for a South Dakota driver’s license.

    Common timing mistakes

    • Thinking one old lodging receipt lasts indefinitely
    • Assuming online renewal means no South Dakota stay is required
    • Waiting until after the license expires
    • Assuming every renewal can be completed online or by mail
    • Using an outdated Residency Affidavit
    • Not checking whether DPS rules changed since the last renewal
    • Confusing Driver Licensing timing with voting, tax or domicile rules

Learn what the South Dakota Residency Affidavit is and why using the current form matters.

    How Your Best Address helps

Your Best Address helps full time travelers maintain their South Dakota mail forwarding service and understand the administrative steps around their setup. YBA can provide applicable mailbox documentation for eligible clients. YBA is not the Department of Public Safety and does not control Driver Licensing eligibility, approval or renewal timing. A mailing address alone does not establish residency.

    The simplest answer

Think in terms of your driver license renewal cycle, but do not rely on the phrase ‘one night every five years.’

South Dakota driver licenses are generally valid for five years, while qualifying full time travelers currently need proof of a South Dakota overnight stay within the previous year when using the full time traveler Driver Licensing process.

Always check the current DPS requirements before planning your next renewal.
