Can Full Time Travelers Renew a South Dakota Driver’s License Online?
By Jenna Puetz, owner of Your Best Address
Yes, some South Dakota full time travelers can renew an unexpired driver’s license or ID card online or by mail.
South Dakota currently says a full time traveler may be eligible if they did not use the online or mail-in method for their previous renewal or replacement five years earlier. The state also describes this as being able to renew online or by mail once every 10 years.
Eligibility depends on the applicant and the transaction, so confirm the current DPS rules before relying on an online renewal. You can also review the current South Dakota requirements for full time travelers.

How often can a full time traveler renew online or by mail?
South Dakota currently describes the rule in two ways:
- For full time travelers who use a mail forwarding service, DPS says you may be eligible if your license or ID card has not yet expired and you did not use the online or mail-in method 5 years ago, the last time you renewed or replaced it.
- South Dakota DPS says full time travelers can renew their license or ID card online or by mail once every 10 years.
In practice, that means online or mail renewal is not available every renewal cycle. DPS also lists not having applied in person in the last ten years as a reason you need to visit a Driver Licensing location. For help planning your return trips, see our guide.
What documents does a full time traveler need for online renewal?
In addition to the application, fees and standard renewal documents, current DPS guidance for full time travelers who use a mail forwarding service lists:
- A completed Residency Affidavit. If applying online or by mail, DPS says your signature on the form must be notarized by a public notary.
- A receipt from a South Dakota hotel, motel, campground or RV park showing one night of stay within the last year. The receipt must include your name.
- One document showing your name and personal mailbox (PMB) address, such as a receipt from the mail forwarding company or a document with your PMB address on it.
DPS notes that the lodging receipt does not have to show your PMB address, but an additional address document will be required if it does not. Standard renewal requirements also apply. Can you use a mail forwarding address for online renewal?
Qualifying full time travelers who use an eligible personal mailbox through a mail forwarding service can use the full time traveler process when they meet the current requirements. DPS states that virtual addresses or virtual postal addresses will not be accepted.

Do you need another South Dakota overnight stay?
For full time travelers using a mail forwarding service, current DPS guidance requires a receipt from a South Dakota hotel, motel, campground or RV park showing one night of stay within the last year, with your name on it. If your last stay was more than a year ago, plan for a new one before you renew. This requirement is part of the full time traveler process, not a rule for every South Dakota resident.
What if your license is already expired?
Online and mail renewal require a current, unexpired license or ID card. If your driver’s license has been expired for more than 30 days, DPS says you are required to visit an exam station in person and pass a knowledge test. If you have a motorcycle endorsement (Class 2 license), you will have to take the operator’s knowledge test and the motorcycle knowledge test. You must schedule an appointment to take a test.
What if this is your first South Dakota driver’s license?
Online and mail options are for renewals and replacements. To obtain a driver license or ID card for the first time in South Dakota, DPS requires you to visit a South Dakota Driver Licensing location in person. Our South Dakota Residency guide explains the first time setup.
How long does online or mail renewal take?
For full time travelers, South Dakota DPS currently says online and mail-in applications typically process in 4 to 6 weeks. If you mail your proof of address documents, vision statement or other required documents instead of uploading them electronically, it may take longer. No delivery date is guaranteed.
What if you are age 65 or older?
If you are age 65 or older and renewing online or by mail, South Dakota DPS requires a vision statement completed by an eye doctor and dated within one year of the date you apply. Your vision scores must be recorded on the South Dakota DPS vision statement form.
When should a full time traveler renew?
Plan ahead rather than waiting until the last minute:
- Check your eligibility well before your license expires
- Review the current DPS renewal pages
- Gather your PMB and residency documents
- Complete any required South Dakota stay
- Allow time for processing
- Avoid waiting until your license has already expired
Online, by mail or in person: which option makes sense?
Online
May work for an eligible, unexpired renewal. Requires an SD.gov login. Documents can be uploaded or sent separately.
By mail
May work for an eligible, unexpired renewal. Requires a signed paper application, documents, payment and a self-addressed stamped envelope.
In person
Required for a first South Dakota license and for certain situations, such as a license expired more than 30 days, required testing, or not having applied in person in the last ten years.
No option is always better. The right one depends on your eligibility, timing and travel plans.
