How Do Full Time RVers Establish South Dakota Residency?
By Jenna Puetz, owner of Your Best Address
Full time RVers who no longer maintain a traditional permanent residence may be able to establish South Dakota residency by creating a qualifying South Dakota home base, preparing the required documentation, physically coming to South Dakota and completing the appropriate state processes.
A South Dakota mail forwarding account can be an important part of that setup, but a mailbox by itself does not establish residency.

Why South Dakota works differently for full time RVers
Many full time RVers no longer have a traditional house or apartment. They still need a consistent, dependable set of records for:
- Driver's license
- Vehicles
- Insurance
- Banking
- Voting, where applicable
- Taxes and legal records
South Dakota offers a defined process for full time travelers, which is one reason many RVers consider it. Whether it is right for you depends on your own situation. This article is general education, not legal or tax advice.
The basic South Dakota residency process for a full time RVer
- 1.Establish an appropriate South Dakota mailing address.
- 2.Determine whether South Dakota fits your individual situation.
- 3.Prepare the required original documents.
- 4.Travel to South Dakota.
- 5.Complete the required stay and keep the qualifying documentation.
- 6.Complete the applicable driver's license or other state process.
- 7.Update other records carefully after your South Dakota setup is complete.
Exact requirements depend on the transaction and your individual circumstances. For a fuller overview, see our South Dakota Residency guide.
Does a mail forwarding address make you a South Dakota resident?
No.
A mail forwarding address gives you a dependable South Dakota mailing address. By itself, it does not establish residency, domicile or tax residency, and it is not guaranteed to be accepted by every agency or private institution. It is one piece of a larger setup.
Do full time RVers have to come to South Dakota?
Yes. For the South Dakota full time traveler driver licensing process, the South Dakota Department of Public Safety currently requires a receipt from a South Dakota hotel, motel, campground, or RV park showing one night of stay within the last year. The receipt must include the applicant's name.
Under the current South Dakota Driver Licensing requirements for qualifying full time travelers, applicants using a personal mailbox or mail forwarding service are required to provide:
- A completed Residency Affidavit
- A receipt proving one night of stay in South Dakota within the last year
- One document showing the applicant's name and South Dakota personal mailbox address
Virtual addresses or virtual postal addresses are not accepted for this driver licensing process.
This one night stay is a requirement of the driver licensing process. It does not by itself establish residency for every legal, tax, voting, banking, insurance or other purpose.

What should you prepare before your South Dakota trip?
A practical starting list:
- Current identification
- Required original documents
- Proof related to your South Dakota mailing address
- Qualifying stay documentation, when applicable
- Driver's license paperwork, when applicable
- Vehicle paperwork, if completing vehicle transactions
- Insurance information, where relevant
- Appointments, if required
This is not a complete legal checklist. Confirm exact requirements before you travel using the official South Dakota required documents list, and check the current requirements before you travel.
What about your RV and other vehicles?
Your driver's license and your vehicle registrations are separate processes. Full time RVers often have more than one vehicle, such as:
- Motorhome
- Truck
- Tow vehicle or toad
- Travel trailer
- Fifth wheel
- Motorcycle
- Other vehicles
Requirements may differ by transaction. Learn more about South Dakota vehicle registration, or see how motorhome registration works.
What about banking and residential address requirements?
A mailing address and a residential property address are not the same thing. Some organizations have separate identity verification or residential address requirements, and rules are not the same at every bank or institution.
If you are specifically asked for a residential property address, Dakota Address is a separate YBA service. It is not required for every traveler.
What should you do before selling your house?
- Understand where your driver's license will be based
- Review your vehicle registrations
- Review your insurance
- Review your banking and financial accounts
- Identify records currently tied to your home address
- Create a dependable mail plan
- Avoid changing everything at once before you understand the requirements
Our Full Time Travelers page covers building your home base when you go full time. Before you list the house, work through our before-you-sell checklist.
Common mistakes full time RVers make
- Assuming a mailbox alone creates residency
- Changing every account before understanding the requirements
- Arriving without the required original documents
- Confusing vehicle registration with driver's license requirements
- Assuming every bank accepts the same address type
- Failing to keep qualifying travel documentation
- Waiting until the last minute
- Assuming another RVer's situation will be identical to yours
Voting eligibility follows its own rules. See South Dakota's residency qualification for voting.
