Before You Sell Your Home to Travel Full Time: Your South Dakota Residency Checklist

By Jenna Puetz, owner of Your Best Address

Do not wait until after you sell your home to figure out where your mail, driver’s license, vehicles, banking and insurance will be tied.

If South Dakota will become your home base as a full time traveler, start planning the administrative transition before you give up your current residence.

Your mailing address is only one part of that plan. Driver Licensing, vehicle registration, banking, insurance, voting and tax or domicile questions can each have different requirements.

    Last reviewed: October 2026

Start with the question: are you actually going full time?

South Dakota’s current Driver Licensing guidance says applicants must have a physical residential address in South Dakota, OR live full time in an RV or camper, OR travel full time for work, such as a traveling nurse or truck driver.

This is a Driver Licensing rule. You do not have to sell a home to qualify. However, the current Residency Affidavit asks applicants to affirm that they do not stay, live in, or maintain a residence in another state, so keeping a residence elsewhere may affect eligibility for the full time traveler exception. Set up your mailing address before you move

It is practical to have a dependable mail forwarding system working before you leave your current home, so nothing important gets lost in the transition. Think about:

    • Government mail
    • Financial mail
    • Vehicle documents
    • Insurance correspondence
    • Medical mail
    • Personal mail
    • Business mail, when applicable

Changing your mailing address does not, by itself, establish residency.

Understand what your PMB can and cannot do

PMB means Personal Mailbox. A PMB receives your mail and can support the qualifying South Dakota full time traveler Driver Licensing process when current requirements are met. A PMB is not automatically a residential property address, and it is not automatically accepted for every banking, insurance, tax, voting or government purpose.

Current DPS guidance says virtual addresses or virtual postal addresses are not accepted for this process. Read more about using a South Dakota mail forwarding address for a driver’s license.

Review your South Dakota Driver Licensing documents early

Review the current DPS requirements before you travel. Applicable items may include:

    • Identity and lawful status documentation
    • Social Security documentation
    • Name change documentation, where applicable
    • Residency Affidavit
    • Personal mailbox documentation
    • South Dakota overnight stay receipt

Originals or certified documents may be required, and DPS says photocopies are not accepted for certain documents. See the full list of documents full time travelers need for a South Dakota driver’s license, or check the current South Dakota requirements summary.

    Plan your South Dakota visit

The current full time traveler process requires a receipt from a South Dakota hotel, motel, campground or RV park showing one night of stay within the last year, with your name on it. One night is the minimum documented stay for this Driver Licensing process. It does not automatically establish domicile or residency for every purpose. Read how long you need to stay in South Dakota and how often full time travelers need to return.

    Prepare the Residency Affidavit correctly

Qualifying mail forwarding users complete the current South Dakota Residency Affidavit. The official form describes itself as a request for an exception to the proof of residency requirement for a driver license or ID card. Always use the current official state form.

The current form permits signing in the presence of either a notary public or a South Dakota driver license examiner, so you do not always need it notarized before arriving. Learn more about the South Dakota Residency Affidavit.

    Do not forget your vehicles

Vehicle registration and Driver Licensing are separate administrative processes. Before moving, identify:

    • Every vehicle you own
    • Who is listed on each title
    • Whether a lien exists
    • Where each vehicle is currently titled
    • Whether you own a motorhome
    • Whether you own a separate tow vehicle
    • Whether you own a trailer
    • Your current insurance arrangements

Know that vehicle rules may create separate fees

South Dakota Department of Revenue vehicle rules can differ from Driver Licensing rules. DOR currently charges an additional $100 administrative fee in certain title transactions when the applicant has neither a South Dakota driver license or ID nor a physical South Dakota address. DOR specifically says P.O. boxes and mail forwarding addresses do not count as a physical address for that particular fee. That does not affect the other permitted uses of a mail forwarding address.

Talk with your insurance company before changing addresses

Insurers may care about facts such as:

    • Where vehicles are primarily garaged
    • Where they are used
    • Where the policyholder resides
    • Whether the RV is used full time
    • Vehicle type

Accurately explain your actual travel and vehicle circumstances to your insurer. An address accepted for South Dakota Driver Licensing does not automatically satisfy an insurer. This article is not insurance advice.

Review your banks and financial accounts before giving up your old address

Banks, lenders, credit unions, brokerages and retirement account providers may distinguish between a mailing address, a residential or physical address, and an address used for identity verification. A PMB accepted for Driver Licensing does not guarantee acceptance by a financial institution. Understand each institution’s requirements before eliminating your current residential address.

Most travelers do not need one, but for clients with a legitimate need for a residential address, YBA offers a separate Dakota Address solution.

    Think about voting separately

Voter registration uses separate rules from Driver Licensing. A South Dakota driver’s license, a PMB or one overnight stay does not automatically provide full South Dakota voting eligibility.

Effective January 1, 2026, if someone applies to register using only the address of a commercial mail receiving agency, mail forwarding service or other post office box as their residence address, without providing a description of the location of their habitation, South Dakota may register that person only as a federal voter. The Secretary of State also publishes the current legal definition of residency for voter registration.

Think about taxes and domicile before cutting ties

South Dakota does not impose an individual state income tax. But moving your mail, getting a South Dakota driver’s license or spending one night in South Dakota does not automatically end residency or tax obligations in another state. Other states may use their own domicile and residency standards.

If you have significant property, businesses, income or other ties to another state, advice from a qualified tax or legal professional familiar with multi-state residency may help. This article is not individualized tax or legal advice. Read residency vs. domicile for full time travelers.

Make a list of everything still using your old address

    • Driver license
    • Vehicle titles and registrations
    • Auto insurance
    • RV insurance
    • Health insurance
    • Banks
    • Credit cards
    • Brokerage accounts
    • Retirement accounts
    • Employer or payroll
    • Tax records
    • Voter registration
    • Medical providers
    • Professional licenses
    • Business filings
    • Subscriptions
    • Family and emergency contacts

This is an inventory, not a recommendation to use one replacement address for everything.

Decide which address each account actually needs

One of our core principles: do not blindly change every account to the same address. Each type of address serves a different function.

    Mailing address

Where your mail is delivered. For many full time travelers, a South Dakota PMB through a mail forwarding service.

    Residential or physical address

Where a person actually lives. Some institutions ask for this separately from a mailing address.

    Business address

The address a business uses for its own mail and records.

    Registered Agent address

The South Dakota address where a business entity receives official legal and state notices.

    Garaging location

Where a vehicle is primarily kept and used, which insurers may ask about.

Build your document folder before you travel

    • Birth certificate or passport, as applicable
    • Current driver license
    • Social Security documentation, as applicable
    • Name change records, where applicable
    • YBA PMB agreement or receipt
    • Mail showing your PMB address, where applicable
    • Current Residency Affidavit
    • South Dakota lodging receipt
    • Vehicle titles
    • Lien information
    • Purchase paperwork
    • Insurance information
    • Appointment confirmations

Follow current DPS rules on originals and certified documents. Photocopies are not acceptable where DPS says they are not.

Do not cancel everything on the same day

Set up the new systems first, understand each organization’s requirements and preserve access to important records before shutting down old mail or contact methods. Once you no longer live at your old address, do not keep claiming it as your residence.

    A 30-day planning timeline

An educational example only. This is NOT a South Dakota legal deadline.

    1. 1

Around 30 days before going full time

      • Choose the appropriate mail forwarding setup
      • Inventory all accounts and address uses
      • Review current South Dakota Driver Licensing documents
      • Review vehicles and titles
      • Talk with insurers
      • Review important banking and financial account address requirements
      • Plan the South Dakota visit
    2. 2

      Closer to departure

      • Gather original and certified documents
      • Complete appropriate address changes
      • Confirm South Dakota Driver Licensing plans
      • Confirm lodging documentation requirements
      • Organize vehicle documents
      • Preserve records from the current residence
    3. 3

      After going full time

      • Complete applicable South Dakota administrative steps
      • Update remaining organizations as appropriate
      • Maintain copies of important documents and receipts
      • Review address requirements when opening new accounts

This is a planning example, not a statutory timeline.

Common mistakes before going full time

    • Selling or ending the lease before thinking through mail
    • Changing every account to one address
    • Assuming a PMB is a residential property address
    • Waiting until arriving at Driver Licensing to review required documents
    • Forgetting name change records
    • Not talking with the insurer
    • Ignoring bank physical address requirements
    • Assuming vehicle registration and Driver Licensing are the same process
    • Assuming one overnight stay settles every domicile question
    • Failing to preserve records from the transition
    • Relying on an old Facebook post instead of current South Dakota requirements

The goal is a clean transition, not just a new address

Going full time changes more than where you sleep. It changes how government agencies, banks, insurers and other organizations reach you and identify where you belong.

The best time to organize those systems is before you hand over the keys to your old home.

A good South Dakota setup is not about finding one address to put everywhere. It is about understanding what each part of your life actually requires and building a home base that continues to work while you travel.
