Can I Use a South Dakota Mail Forwarding Address for My Driver's License?

By Jenna Puetz, owner of Your Best Address

Yes, qualifying full time travelers can use an eligible South Dakota personal mailbox through a mail forwarding service as part of the South Dakota driver licensing process. But the mailbox by itself is not enough.

South Dakota currently requires qualifying full time travelers to meet additional requirements, including the Residency Affidavit and proof of a qualifying South Dakota stay. A virtual only address is not the same thing as an eligible personal mailbox for this process.

What kind of mailing address does South Dakota accept for full time travelers?

Current South Dakota Driver Licensing rules for qualifying full time travelers recognize a personal mailbox, or PMB, through a mail forwarding service when the required documentation is provided.

A virtual only address or virtual postal address is different. Virtual only addresses are not accepted for this driver licensing process. The Residency Affidavit asks applicants to confirm that their personal mailbox service is a mail forwarding service and not a virtual only mail service.

Not every commercial address or mailbox provider automatically qualifies. Review the current state requirements before you rely on any address.

Why your mailbox alone is not enough

Your mailbox is only one piece of the process. The full time traveler driver licensing process also involves current state requirements such as:

    • A completed Residency Affidavit
    • Proof of the qualifying South Dakota stay
    • Required identity and lawful status documents
    • Social Security documentation, where applicable
    • Name change documentation, where applicable
    • Mailbox documentation

See the full list in our guide to the documents full time travelers need for a South Dakota driver's license.

What document proves your South Dakota mailbox address?

Qualifying full time travelers need a document showing their name and South Dakota personal mailbox address. The official Residency Affidavit describes this as a document no more than one year old, such as a receipt from the personal mailbox business or a piece of mail with your personal mailbox address on it.

YBA can provide applicable mailbox documentation for clients. Documentation from YBA does not guarantee approval. South Dakota Driver Licensing decides what it accepts.

    What is a PMB?

PMB means Personal Mailbox. A PMB is commonly used with commercial mail receiving and mail forwarding services. It is a mailing address, not a residential address.

A PMB being part of the driver licensing process does not mean it is automatically accepted for banking, insurance, taxes, business filings or every government purpose.

Is a mail forwarding address the same as a residential address?

No. A YBA mail forwarding address is designed for receiving and forwarding mail. A residential property address is a different type of address.

Some institutions may ask for a residential or physical address separately. Many travelers never need one, but if you are asked for a residential property address, you can learn about Dakota Address.

Does a South Dakota mail forwarding address establish residency?

No, not by itself. Opening a mailbox is not the same as completing the South Dakota driver licensing process, and it does not establish domicile for every legal, tax, voting, banking or insurance purpose. Read the South Dakota residency guide to see how the pieces fit together.

Do you need to stay overnight in South Dakota?

For the full time traveler driver licensing process, South Dakota currently requires a receipt showing one night at a South Dakota hotel, motel, campground or RV park within the last year, with the applicant's name.

This is a driver licensing requirement, not a universal definition of residency. Learn what South Dakota's one night stay requirement actually means.

Can you use a virtual mailbox instead?

Not for this process. South Dakota Driver Licensing does not accept a virtual only address or virtual postal address for the full time traveler driver licensing process. Virtual mailbox services can be useful for other needs, but this specific process calls for a personal mailbox through a mail forwarding service.

Does this address work for vehicle registration too?

Driver licensing and vehicle registration are separate processes. Do not assume the same documents or requirements apply. Learn more on our vehicle registration page.

What about banks, insurance companies and other institutions?

Acceptance by South Dakota Driver Licensing does not mean every private institution will accept a PMB for every purpose. Banks, insurers, lenders, brokerages and other organizations may have their own address requirements, and some may require a separate residential or physical address. No address is guaranteed to be accepted everywhere. If a residential property address is specifically required, see Dakota Address. How Your Best Address fits into the process

Your Best Address provides South Dakota mail forwarding and personal mailbox services. YBA can provide applicable mailbox documentation for clients and helps full time travelers understand the administrative steps involved in their South Dakota setup. YBA does not issue driver's licenses, does not determine whether an applicant is approved, and is not part of the South Dakota government.

    Common mistakes

    • Assuming the mailbox alone establishes residency
    • Using a virtual only address
    • Confusing a PMB with a residential address
    • Arriving in South Dakota without the required lodging receipt
    • Forgetting the Residency Affidavit
    • Bringing incomplete identity documents
    • Assuming driver licensing and vehicle registration have identical requirements
    • Assuming a bank or insurer must accept the same address DPS accepts

A simple way to think about it

Your South Dakota mail forwarding address can be part of your driver licensing setup. It is not the entire setup. For qualifying full time travelers, the PMB, supporting documentation, South Dakota stay, Residency Affidavit and standard licensing documents work together.
